Apelo para salvar mulher síria de tortura

Uma viúva síria de 75 anos, Khamisa Mohammed Sawadi, residente na Arábia Saudita, foi condenada a 40 chibatadas e a quatro meses de prisão por ter sido encontrada em casa com dois homens que não são seus familiares directos.

Com Khamisa foram, igualmente, condenados a penas semelhantes os dois jovens, Fahad e Hadyan.

A detenção ocorreu em Abril do ano passado e foi feita pela polícia religiosa. Os dois jovens de 24 anos alegam que apenas foram levar pão à idosa.

Até ao próximo dia 22 de Abril, a Amnistia Internacional promove uma campanha para libertar Khamisa, Fahad e Hadyan. Como forma de protesto, a organização pede que seja enviada uma carta para o rei da Arábia Saudita com cópia para o embaixador do país em Portugal.

Your Majesty,

I am writing to express my concerns regarding the future of Khamisa Mohammed Sawadi, Fahad and Hadyan, convicted in your country to flogging and imprisonment on charges I believe to be inconsistent with international human rights standards.

I wish to urge the authorities not to carry out the sentences of flogging, and would like to take this opportunity to remind Your Majesty that Saudi Arabia is a state party to the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, according to which this punishment is clearly inconsistent.

Therefore, I call on the authorities to bring Saudi Arabian laws and practices in line with international laws and standards against torture, flogging and arbitrary imprisonment, by suspending these procedures at once and further and thoroughly investigating the cases.
